American sports arrive in Britain through bookmakers’ translations, and the translation is part of what a punter has to understand.

The big four are ice hockey, baseball, basketball and American football; esports, kabaddi, handball, volleyball, water polo, floorball and field hockey trail behind. Point spreads, totals and individual player lines take the place of football’s simple win-draw-win.

Odds in Britain are fractional or decimal. American odds are not used here, and converting is plain arithmetic. A virtual-events product belongs to a separate licence category, which establishes licensing, not rules.
